What is the OTPF?

I think it is important to define what exactly the OTPF is both to people who are familiar with the field of occupational therapy, and those who are not. OTPF stands for the Occupational Therapy Practice Framework, and it is a document by which all occupational therapy services are based. Its purpose is really to create a standard with set language that all occupational therapists can use to know how to provide treatment for their clients, but also to help in communication with others in the field. The OTPF has two main sections, which are domain which explains the scope of OT, and process which explains how OT practitioners should work with their clients. The domain section focuses on identifying what about the client will influence their time in occupational therapy, such as their context and environment along with occupations they find important. But it also includes factors about them such as their values and beliefs, along with their capabilities in motor and social skills. The domain portion includes a variety of sections about what makes the client unique, which is a necessary thing for all occupational therapists to know going forward in their practice. The process section then relays how an occupational therapist is to go about evaluating, planning an intervention, and setting goals for outcomes for a client. Overall, this document is basically a manual for occupational therapists to help them abide by the standards and practices of the field.
